Who We Are…

I have been fortunate to be a resident of this amazing city of Bismarck for the last five years. My husband is a Bismarck native and we decided that this is where we would continue to raise our blended family of 7 children. My husband graduated from Bismarck High school and was insistent that our children would be attending there as well. Ryan returned to college and completed his bachelors degree in business this last summer as our son graduated from BHS. Our fourth son will graduate from BHS this next spring. We also have two freshmen at BHS and our youngest is in 7th grade at Wachter Middle School. Our oldest recently completed his Bachelor’s degree in Music from University of Jamestown.

Who I am…

I myself am a firm believer in education and lifelong learning. I earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology then attended Medical school at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas. After completing my medical degree I continued my training at Texas Tech through the department of Family Medicine and Community Health Residency program to become a board certified family physician. My special interest after completing residency was specifically the health of women and children. I practiced full scope family medicine for over 6 years before moving to North Dakota five years ago where I now practice acute care.

My Philosophy

I was asked several times throughout my career why I chose women’s health and family medicine when I was so passionate about children. My response is always the same-that the health of the child starts with the mother and family. I continue to support this in the education of children- it starts with the family unit. We as parents, grandparents, step-parents, aunts and uncles need to take ownership in the education of the next generation. As a member of the school board, I will remember that families are the primary stakeholders in their children's education but will also encourage families to take an active role in teaching their children as well.

My Drive

I grew up in a small community with a population of about 2,500. We were not only lacking in health care but also in educational opportunities compared to the rest of the state. Currently, students graduating from high school in my home town are making far less academic progress than last year compared to other students across the state. Students there are making very low progress with low test scores and are falling academically even farther behind their peers. I was fortunate that I had the will and drive to push myself to become educated given our lack of resources. Most students do not have this drive nor the support needed to succeed. I believe firmly that all children deserve equal opportunities to learn and that it is our job as parents to assure their education is the best that it can be. It is our job as members of the school board to ensure equal resources and opportunities for all students.
